Hurricane Evacuees Welcomed in East Tennessee

Statement

Date: Sept. 4, 2008

HURRICANE EVACUEES WELCOMED IN EAST TENNESSEE

As the Gulf Coast evacuees who fled Hurricane Gustav and came to East Tennessee start returning to their homes, they will leave with a grateful memory of the welcoming spirit and generosity of our people. Local agencies like the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and law enforcement along with scores of volunteers welcomed hurricane evacuees, offered shelter, prepared and served food and provided other necessities to those who were forced to leave their homes.

We were created first to serve God and then our neighbors. The volunteer spirit has been a cause of pride for generations of Tennesseans, and we can be proud of the southern hospitality that East Tennesseans extended to our fellow Americans during their time of need.
